January 2009 Heartland Breach
This could affect signature based debit card transactions. In January 2009, transaction processor Heartland reported an extremely large data breach from their systems. Heartland does not directly process for CUB; however, they do process for many businesses such as restaurants, convenience stores, online merchants that you may frequent. If you perform a transaction that Heartland processes, you could be at risk. Due to the large amount of card information, potentially, stolen from Heartland, the major Visa and MasterCard network processors and bank processors have determined High Risk areas and instituted blocks on signature based transactions in those areas. To date, the breach includes, but is not limited to, the following High Risk Areas: Entire states of California, New Jersey and New York. The entire countries of Canada and Mexico. The following merchant types have been designated High Risk as well: Gas Stations, Groceries, Discount Stores, Pharmacies, Fast Food Restaurants, Department Stores and Computer Software. If you plan to travel through or visit any of the High Risk areas listed, you have the option of becoming temporarily or permanently exempt. Requesting a permanent exemption does not mean that you are no longer at risk. You must be diligent in reviewing your account transactions and if any unusual activity is noticed, you should contact the bank immediately at l 502-633-4450 (toll free 1-866-633-4450). Thank you.
